Interview with Ana Kraŝ25/07/2012
Ana Kraŝ has just moved from Serbia to New York. She is a maker of alluring objects and illustrations, and a taker of seductive photographs. Whatever she turns her mind to has an earthy and simplistic appeal, nothing too showy or sterile, but rather works that are imbued with the hand of the artist behind them.
Clementine Widdowson – de Pressigny: Ana can you tell me about growing up and studying in Serbia, and how youthink this has informed your work?
Ana Kras: Growing up in Serbia certainly did influence the way I am nowadays. Living in Serbia, you have to get used to a lot of unhappiness all around you, and many limits. The environment you grow up in makes you ask certain questions, and that leads your thoughts toward something you end up making.
CMWDP: What is important to you in terms of design?
AK: It’s important that I enjoy having that object around and that I enjoy using it. I like things that are simple and humble over very shiny and aggressive shapes. But that is how I feel for people and other things too, so it's not so much about the design.
CMWDP: Can you tell me about your collaboration with Petar Savić for Foundry?
AK: Petar is a designer and a very dear friend of mine. Since I first became a student I have always asked his opinion about every furniture project I do.
That helps me a lot because I easily get all over the place and tend to focus on too many things, while he is opposite of that. I enjoy working with him, and once I got asked to design a side table for Foundry I just thought it would be a great pleasure to do it with Petar. Answering this question has made me realise that Petar is actually the only person I talk to about furniture.
CMWDP: You work in a lot of different practices - photography and illustration as well as object design. Do you see themes in your work that link the way you approach these different mediums?
AK: Since it all comes from the same fingers there must be a lot of links I am not even aware of.
CMWDP: What is it that draws you to a piece of design - what do you think you appreciate in an object?
AK: It's always a feeling; I never sit and think what is good about a piece.
I instantly feel for it, and then if I ask myself why I can dig deeper, and retrospectively find out what attracted me in the first place. It can be colours, or the combination of textures, or the shape, or the idea behind it, or maybe even my mood at that particular moment.
CMWDP: Whose work has got you excited at the moment?
AK: There are so many people making beautiful things in so many different fields. These days I am very into Arthur Russell singing sad songs.
CMWDP: What makes your list of favourite galleries or museums?
AK: I don't have a single favourite one, but I love to visit the old national museum in each city I go to.
CMWDP: Who are some Serbian artists to look out for?
AK: Marina Abramovic for sure.
CMWDP: What are you working on or planning for right now?
AK: I just moved to NYC and it takes a while to settle down and start fully working, but I have been making some Bonbon lamps and I am also working on some new furniture pieces and a few photography projects.
